Musical ListsThis is an idea given to me by my Auntie Jacqueline, who also teaches MFL, so credit to her for this! I just adapted it slightly for an observation I had with a Year 11 group (I got my very first Outstanding - yay!). The idea is simple. Students work in pairs and are given a sheet of paper with a topic at the top ie. Holidays and vocabulary from that topic below - this could be in English, the TL or a mixture both. Each pair have a different topic. Play some music (I highly recommend Kevin, Karla y LaBanda for Spanish. They do great covers of popular English songs - check out their YouTube channel). Students have to translate as many of the words as possible while the music is playing. When the music stops, they pass the sheet on to the next pair and gain another sheet with a different topic. It's a great way of identifying which topic areas they struggle on the most and it was nice to see my Year 11s so focused. The resources for this are at the end of this blog post, free to download. Odd One OutAnother idea my Auntie reminded me of was Odd One Out, a nice little activity which I always seem to forget about. I've used this as a starter in my observation lesson, but I'd definitely give them more time if I were to do this again with another class. I made 3 sheets for different abilities, as well as the answer sheets to go with them. Each sheet had 20 sets of 4 words. Students had to figure out which of the 4 words was the odd one out and why. Resources also free to download at the end of this post. Feel free to share this with your departments or social media. Hope you find this useful. Dannielle x
