Before I explain this idea I would like to thank Esther Mercier for sharing it originally. This is a great minimal prep activity and there's even a free template for you to download at the bottom of this blogpost. The example you can see below is one I used with a Year 8 group just before their reading assessment, as I wanted to ensure they were comfortable with the phrases that I knew would be appearing in the assessment. Simply prepare a grid of phrases you want your students to practise (or just adapt the freebie at the bottom of this post). I prepared mine in PowerPoint. Students work in pairs if possible, with one sheet between two. It may help if they have a different coloured pen to their partner. The teacher then reads out the L1 word or phrase and the students have to race their opponent to be the first to find the L2 phrase on the sheet and tick it. They keep a tally and whoever is the one with the most ticks could win achievement points or some sweets. Having spoken to Esther about this activity, I've realised it can be exploited in a few different ways. Esther recommends giving phrases that would join together to make a sentence. She suggests following the Tick Me Quick game with some mini whiteboard translations, then asking students to produce some sentences of their own using these phrases. Hope it's useful! Dannielle
