At the bottom of this post you will find resources on the topic of Holidays including PowerPoints, translations, reading exercise, starter activities, vocabulary sheets, writing tasks etc. These were created for a lower ability Y7 Spanish group. The dice game went down really well with my group! Feel free to share with your colleagues and adapt. Hope they're useful. Dannielle
Any great ideas for European Language Day? Please add them to the Padlet below.
I'm just trying to get ahead, as things are always rather hectic in September! Dannielle I've made this to give out at our Year 9 Parents Evening as I find that usually parents really want to help, but don't really know how to. I also find that I end up repeating myself a lot at parents evenings, so hopefully this should save my voice a bit! Feel free to adapt this and share with colleagues/students/parents. Hope it's useful. Dannielle

All of the resources you see in this post are available to download at the bottom of the page. I've posted previously about the ways I prepare my Year 11s for their GCSEs. This year I have one Year 11 French group, 1 Year 10 Spanish group and 1 Year 9 French group and I've found it to be quite the challenge teaching the current GCSE, whilst also getting to grips with the new one. I'm sure I'm not the only one! For the current Year 11s our department decided to have all Controlled Assessments completed by Christmas to give us the rest of the year to focus purely on the Reading and Listening exams. French Revision PacksBefore February half-term I gave out these revision packs to help them prepare for their final mock exams. Each one contains:
French GCSE Survival Kit Each booklet contains:
Reading and Listening PracticeFor most of this half a term we have been working through the Reading and Listening exercises on Kerboodle. I split the class into Foundation and Higher and had answer sheets prepared for most activities, to allow them to check and green pen their reading answers. For the listening exercises I normally start with the Foundation students, while the Higher students quietly get on with their Reading exercises, then we swap over. We have a discussion at the start about how they would tackle that exercise in an exam (reminding them to use their 5 minute preparation time wisely!). We discuss and make a note of the vocabulary they need to listen out for and what could be the potential problems with each listening exercise. Then once they've completed the exercise we download the transcript from Kerboodle, translate this together as a group and discuss the correct answers. The past couple of weeks each student has been given a pack of Exampro papers to work through. These include QR codes linked to the listening exercises and mark schemes at the back of each section (not included below in the downloads, as these aren't my own work). Vocabulary RevisionMemrise My Year 11s have been using Memrise at home to develop their knowledge of vocabulary. I track the leaderboards and give prizes to the top 3 each week. I also give students 2 house points each time they complete a course. In lessons I often hear them say, "I remember this one because I saw it on Memrise". I think the repetition really helps the vocabulary to stick in their minds. Kahoot I still use Kahoot with my classes. Students love the interactivity and they're actually learning something! There are lots of ready made Kahoots too. Here's one I made on the topic of Environment. Song Challenge Activity I was recently lucky enough to attend the New GCSE MFL course in London run by Wendy Adeneji and found it to be incredibly useful. One of my favourite ideas from the day was to give students a big list of vocabulary in the target language, then give them the duration of the song to translate as many of these as possible. Go through the answers and get the students to fill in any they've missed or correct any they got wrong. You could also get them to think of ways to remember this vocabulary. They then add up their score and set themselves a target for next time. You can give them the same vocabulary next lesson/week and hopefully their scores will have gone up. I chose a mixture of words from different topics - most of the words were the ones they have been struggling with when we've done Kahoot quizzes. Vocabulary Tests We've been doing vocabulary tests every Monday with the words taken from the back of the AQA French Revision Guide. I give out House Points to anyone who gets 18+/20. Vocabulary Cards Students also have access to packs of match up vocabulary cards on all of the topics covered in the exams. Trivial Pursuit I've blogged in the past about my GCSE Spanish Trivial Pursuit. Last year's Year 11s loved playing this and it helped them figure out which topics they still needed to work on. A few people have translated this into other languages, but unfortunately I haven't managed to get this printed off in French yet! Any other great ideas for preparing the Year 11s for their Reading and Listening exams? Let me know in the comments below :) Don't forget you can download all the resources mentioned at the bottom of this post. Hope you found this useful! Dannielle x

A while ago I wrote a blog post about a site called Memrise. I've created an information booklet, which is free to download below. This is kind of a step by step guide to Memrise, from setting up your own account to creating courses for your students. I've printed a copy for the MFL Department and will also give a copy to our new trainee. If there's anything I've missed please let me know. Feel free to print a copy for your own department and share with colleagues. I hope you find it useful. Dannielle Warren Twitter: @morganmfl Facebook: @morganmfl
Thank you to @_Hannah_Edwards for sharing her resources and information for the new MFL GCSE! I just adapted the information sheet she kindly shared with me. Feel free to download these posters for free below. Hope they're useful! Dannielle Warren
I've created a revision pack for my Year 7 Spanish group. They're quite keen so I figured I'd give it to them to do over Summer if they wanted. It contains most of the topics and vocabulary we covered this year, so hopefully they'll go into Year 8 with this fresh in their minds! They can just work through these exercises at their own pace and then mark their own work using the answer sheets at the back. The pack contains: Front cover P1 - Numbers, colours, general vocabulary, verbs P2 - Present tense P3 - Near future tense P4 - Connectives, weather, time and frequency phrases P5 - Family, descriptions - appearance & personality, verbs P6 - Sports, hobbies, verbs, opinions P7 - Verbs, food, opinions Answer sheets See below or my TES page for the free downloads. Hope you find it useful! Feel free to share with colleagues! Dannielle

April has been such an good month; I had my first outstanding observation and I'm incredibly proud to still be getting lots of positive feedback for my Trivial Pursuit game. A few people have also translated it into French which is great!
Not only that, but I've found it really hard to tear myself away from Twitter recently as there have been so many amazing ideas. I love that I am constantly inspired by the #mfltwitterati, as well as teachers of other subjects who also tweet their brilliant teaching ideas. The Bad Pedagogue - Free Resources
Shaun Williams (@thebadpedagogue), who I believe is an English teacher, shared his amazing resources website. I'm sure these could be used in MFL and other subjects, and if anyone's like me, I'm sure you'll love how neat and professional these resources look.
Adobe Voice
There have been some great ideas from Carolyn (@Londoncarolyn) too. She shared a video she'd made with the Adobe Voice app. You could create your own video to show your class or even get your students to create their own.
Ultratext
Clare Seccombe (@valleseco) shared her blogpost on the Ultratext app. I've had a go at this (see below) and there are lots of ideas on how it could be used on her blog. Take a look!
@Miss_White_Hist
I came across Miss White's Twitter (@Miss_White_Hist) a while back and spent about an hour just scrolling down her page and retweeting - so many amazing ideas on her page and love how creative she is! She teaches History, but I'm sure her ideas could be adapted for MFL.
InstaEspañol
I love (and will definitely be stealing) this InstaEspañol idea shared by Wyedean MFL (@MFLWyedean). Would be great for the holidays topic!
@MissMcIntyre15
Miss McIntyre (@missmcintyre15) also regularly tweets her creative teaching ideas. She's a primary teacher, but I'm sure lots of these ideas could be used for secondary teaching too.
Musical ListsThis is an idea given to me by my Auntie Jacqueline, who also teaches MFL, so credit to her for this! I just adapted it slightly for an observation I had with a Year 11 group (I got my very first Outstanding - yay!). The idea is simple. Students work in pairs and are given a sheet of paper with a topic at the top ie. Holidays and vocabulary from that topic below - this could be in English, the TL or a mixture both. Each pair have a different topic. Play some music (I highly recommend Kevin, Karla y LaBanda for Spanish. They do great covers of popular English songs - check out their YouTube channel). Students have to translate as many of the words as possible while the music is playing. When the music stops, they pass the sheet on to the next pair and gain another sheet with a different topic. It's a great way of identifying which topic areas they struggle on the most and it was nice to see my Year 11s so focused. The resources for this are at the end of this blog post, free to download. Odd One OutAnother idea my Auntie reminded me of was Odd One Out, a nice little activity which I always seem to forget about. I've used this as a starter in my observation lesson, but I'd definitely give them more time if I were to do this again with another class. I made 3 sheets for different abilities, as well as the answer sheets to go with them. Each sheet had 20 sets of 4 words. Students had to figure out which of the 4 words was the odd one out and why. Resources also free to download at the end of this post. Feel free to share this with your departments or social media. Hope you find this useful. Dannielle x
About a month ago I shared my Trivial Pursuit inspired game on here and on social media and I'm completely amazed at how much positive feedback I've had since then. Thank you for all the lovely comments! It's an amazing feeling to know that something I have made and worked very hard on is being used in other schools as far as Malaysia (still shocked about this!!!) and that it's making a difference. I've been a busy bee creating this Trivial Pursuit game for my Spanish Y11s (well what else would I do with my half term?!) I've managed to find a Trivial Pursuit board template online so I've just added some game rules to this. I then made question cards (mostly vocabulary taken from the AQA Revision Guide for Spanish) and a sheet to go with the game. See the bottom of this page for the free downloads. Please let me know if it's useful and feel free to share! Dannielle
